| Out and About in and Around Maury |
MarketsThere is a daily market in Maury in the plaza at the top of the hill. Some days vegetables and fruit, some days meat and/or fish. In Estagel there is a market every Friday and Monday with a full range of produce, meat and fish as well as some household goods and clothing. There is an excellent general market in Perpignan in the Place Republic every day except Monday.
Le Pain Paysan is an outstanding artisan bakery at Espira de l'Agly just west of Perpignan. They make wonderful pizza and tarts and several kinds of lovely bread from a huge wood fired oven. RestaurantsIn Maury, the big buzz is the restaurant in Maison du Terroir. It won a star in the Michelin guide after being open less than a year. It is excellent with an outstanding selection of local wines.
A local favorite is the Resto-Cave, just across the street from the wine co-op tasting room. The cooking is traditional Roussillon country fare and is quite satisfying. The main attraction here is the regional wine selection put together by the owner, Jean Pla, an amiable fellow and a key source of information for the region. You can buy wines at retail here as well as with meals. Also in town is Cafe Queribus. Again, the food is basic Catalan country fare and can be quite good.. There is a terrace. The small cafe just across the street, La Placette, has a pleasant outdoor terrace and the food, while basic, is agreeable. The Auberge du Cellier a Montner is about a 15 minute drive from Maury in the village of Montner. It is operated by owner-chief Pierre Louis Marin and his wife Beatrice Marin. Good wine list and elegant dining. Highly recommended. Le Petit Gris is an outstanding country restaurant just outside of Tautavel, about ten minutes from Maison Voltaire. Grill is the center of attention here.
The Hostellerie du Mont Tauch in the village of Tuchan, the rustic lunch menu is an outstanding bargain. Auberge de Cucugnan is in the village of Cucugnan, overlooking the castle of Queribus. Typical regional fare in an attractive setting. In Perpignan, La Galinette, in the town center near the river, takes a very creative, sometimes playful approach to Catalan regional cuisine. Cafe Vienne on Place Arago in the old quarter is a good lunch spot.

Start at the local co-op sales room just down the street. Look especially for wines labeled Maurynates. Also, right in Maury, there is Domaine Elodie, at the edge of town in the direction of St. Paul. Wonderful sense of place in the wines. Best for the traditional Maury sweet wines is Domaine du Dernier Bastion, on the highway across the street from the co-op wine shop.
A particular favorite is Domaine Rousselin. Laurence and Pascal Rousselin celebrate their passion for wine with lovely bottlings, showing off the terroir and style of the region at their artisan winery in Lesquerde. Contact: 06 12 51 64 58 or dom.rousselin@orange.fr.

A few miles west on the highway to Perpignan is Mas Amiel, one of the largest wineries in the district. They offer very good tastings and the wines are excellent.
